The Hidden Origins of Unhappiness: The Golden Child Syndrome Unhappiness doesn’t start in adulthood for Type A overachievers. It often begins much earlier, rooted in our childhood experiences. As a “golden child,” I grew up under the weight of high expectations, feeling loved and valued only when I achieved. It was never explicitly spelled out to me, but the implicit signals from parents, teachers, and my well-intentioned community were clear. This need for success also became my way of coping with a chaotic and unstable environment. It was something I could control. It was a playbook I understood well, even as a preteen. From around age 13 through high school, my focus on achievement provided a sense of safety in an otherwise chaotic family life. School was my escape—a place where I felt seen and validated. But most of all, success in school was when I felt loved and lovable. This pattern carried into college, grad school, and my professional life. The script ran on autopilot, unbeknownst to me: the belief that success equated to love, safety, and control. I believed that if I just did all the right things, I would find happiness. It didn't work. Decades later, I finally understand that the pattern resulting in my needless pain and unhappiness started in middle school (or even earlier). I want to help others recognize it in their own lives. Perhaps it wasn’t “golden child” syndrome for you, but rather being the oldest or the child who was “parentified”—a term that refers to when a child takes on the inappropriate and premature role of providing for the family and showing up as the adult. At some point in your childhood, you felt you had to show up, perform, and step into character in order to be seen, validated, and loved. Watching video snippets of my 13-year-old self, I see it clearly now—and maybe you will too. I was running a playbook that I wanted to believe would lead to happiness. But beneath the facade of a confident young person was someone wrestling with feelings of inadequacy, suicidal thoughts, and a complex relationship with my faith and my parents. Over time, through therapy, deep introspection, and the research for my upcoming book, I grew to have compassion and love for my inner child and how he showed up later in life. Through my storytelling, I realized that my experience was far more pervasive and common than I imagined—and it's worthy of both grace and interrogation. Based on the strong feedback I’ve received from being open about my story, I know I’m not alone in this.
